Electroplating metal wastes are usually in the form of hydroxide sludges or filter cakes at approximately 20-30% solids concentration. The cleaner production approach is to close-loop recover the metals in-line but the up-take of the technologies available has not been great to date. As a second choice, recovery off-line is possible by a variety of methods. Copper, nickel, chromium and zinc are, by far, the most common metals used and this presentation will discuss some of the recovery methods currently used and others under investigation. These include dissolution followed by electro-winning, sulphide precipitation and solvent extraction. By bulking wastes from many shops, economies of scale can make these systems viable. |

Evaporation has been used for many years in aspects of resource recovery, including in the metal finishing industry. It can be aided by heat and vacuum to increase efficiency, especially if waste heat is available close by. It is important to ensure that the water vapour is condensed and re-used as a meaningful contribution to water conservation in the current water crisis. Evaporation concentration of rinse waters, acid pickles and process solutions will also concentrate any impurities, which must be taken care of with additional technology. The paper will discuss solar, thin film, low temperature, adiabatic pressure and other evaporation techniques and suggest commercial and environmentally friendly application possibilities. |

HDLV (high density low velocity), also termed ‘dense phase’, is a relatively new powder pump technology that provides both operating savings and productivity increases not achievable with conventional venturi pump technology. With this new powder delivery technology, operating savings can be gained in the forms of utility savings such as less compressed air usage, material savings through lower powder usage, and decreased downtime resulting from faster color change times. Because of the low powder velocity achieved through HDLV technology versus conventional venturi pump technology, both the pump and the gun parts that come in contact with the powder see less wear and last for longer periods of time than venturi pump parts that see a much higher velocity air and powder mixture. |

The presentation will introduce a number of new green technologies and their advantages, including the use of biotechnology, automatic dosing control system, membrane anode and advanced ion exchange system in the pretreatment and electroplating processes. By using advanced processes and auxiliary equipment for zinc and zinc-nickel alloy plating as a case study, it has demonstrated that Cleaner Production can be achieved at electroplating factories. Reducing pollutants and wastes generated, reducing utility consumption, and at the same time improving the stability of the plating process had been realized. |

During the presentation, will discuss the new discharge standards for pollutants and compared with the old standards. The situation and existing problems for treatment of electroplating wastewater will be introduced. A new strategy, source control , targeted designing and increases the drainage device is necessary. It is also suggested that the treatment process should adapt an automatic control with a recovery devices installin the wastewater treatment process. The objective is to increase resource utilization rate and reduce treatment cost. |
